British artists used a familiar GIF format and made a few pictures that are more than just a picture of a less than video. Photographer Jamie Beck and her co-worker, graphic artist Kevin Burg, teamed up and produced the so-called cinemagraphy by using GIF format for their images.

All the photos are made by Beck, while Burg later made a graphic movements, for which he needed a few hours per photo. The couple was found to conventional photography can be much interesting by using this method, which means that everything in the picture stands still but one part is designed to be moved to that viewer will be focused just on it.

Thus, one image shows the crowd in the town Square, where all the bodies frozen, all except one man who reads the newspaper. In another image, an outdoor bar is alive with the reflection in the glass, showing a taxi passing by the storefront shops. On one of the pictures is even Jamie Beck herself, where the wind moves only her hair.

They began seriously creating them during fashion week on February. Their first few animated images were sequenced still shots looped in rapid succession which is a fairly common way of making an animated image. From there they began utilizing more fluid motion isolated in certain parts of an image to capture a moment of time, but also to un-freeze a still photograph by showing that moment's temporal movement. The process involves still and video photography but editing is very manual and varies greatly from one to another so they're routinely solving new problems when creating them.

They said that there are many exciting applications for this type of moving image. There's movement in everything and by capturing that plus the great things about a still photograph you get to experience what a video has to offer without the time commitment a video requires. There's something magical about a still photograph, like a moment captured in time.
